Lighting according to the materials of the painting Leave a comment

When lighting a painting it is necessary to have knowledge of the available technology as well as to know what you want to communicate with the work. In addition, it is important to catalog the pieces according to the materials with which they are made:

  • Photos in black and white, stone, metal or ceramic: these are materials that are highly resistant to light and can be kept in good condition with an illuminance level of 300 lux.
  • Oil, tempera, leather, wood or polychrome paints: although they are not very sensitive to light, it can affect both the pictorial film and the canvas fabric, causing a degrading and cumulative effect. It is advisable to limit their exposure to direct sun and avoid placing them near windows. In addition, powerful artificial light bulbs should not be used either. The recommended lighting level is between 150 and 200 lux.
  • Watercolors, fabrics, paper, prints or tapestries: These are works that are very sensitive to light, which can change their color and weaken their structure. Indirect lighting and the use of ultraviolet / infrared filters are recommended. But above all, watch the heat of the light. The illuminance level in these cases is between 50 and 75 lux.
